It can also be an occasion for cheap point-scoring. It seems that Pamela Druckerman's latest book, French Children Don't Throw Food, has achieved both. In championing French parenting over the "anglophone" way, she has triggered a heavy artillery backlash. Coy French parents, embarrassed by such praise, and Anglo-Saxon expats in France have been quick to retaliate. If you think the French way is great, think again, they say: you haven't seen its dark side.

French women are tougher on their children who have fewer tantrums than British and American youngsters, according to a new book.

American mother-of-three Pamela Druckerman, who lives in Paris, claims French children sleep through the night at two months, don't squabble or create scenes in public, are not fussy eaters and go to bed without any problems.

Concern is mounting that new legal nutrition requirements for French school canteens effectively impose meat consumption on six million schoolchildren

There may have been less than 20 of them on the street, but a group of demonstrators in Paris has nonetheless made the national news in France today. Led by the French vegetarian group L214, they gathered in front of the office of the Direction Générale de l'Alimentation, a branch of the Ministry of Agriculture, to call on the government to scrap a decree they claim effectively imposes meat consumption on six million French schoolchildren.

Some British universities like Nottingham, now have campuses overseas

In the past, looking at foreign higher education was something only other countries did, like the new powers of China and India, or the Asian tigers. British expat parents who had to school their children overseas only did so on the understanding that this was in preparation for when they returned to study at a British university. But not anymore. Now, a far greater proportion of British students are studying for a degree abroad: 22,000 in 2010 or 1.7 per cent of the total (compared with just 1.4 per cent of Chinese and one per cent of Indian students).

CHIPS, salt and ketchup are vanishing from the school dinner for six million children across France as a new decree on school meals comes into force.

Aiming to improve the nutritional quality of the meals served, it specifies that four or five courses should be offered, including one with vegetables and one with milk products.

Water and bread will be freely available but salt and sauces such as ketchup, mayonnaise and vinaigrette will not, except where part of a dish. Chips will be served in no more than four meals in 20 and fatty foods will be reduced.

School supplies are a big deal here. The lists are long. And they’re detailed.

Instead of listing something like “notebook”, they’ll specify dimensions, interior details, and color. Shopping for our school supplies took about twice as long as the back-to-school clothes shopping. I think we made 10 trips to 6 different stores before we gathered everything. It surprised me!

Laptops for kids in the L-R area

Next month, 32,000 school children in the Languedoc-Roussillon region in France will be the first in the country's schools to use laptops pre-loaded with free and open source software that are integrated into the national electronic education network (ENT). The regional administration has budgeted 15 million euro for the project.

The laptops come with Open Office, an open source office suite and many other free and open source applications, including a web browser and multi media software. The laptops are preconfigured to access cloud-based storage facilities, offers users new ways to learn languages, allows them to pay for school meals, arrange their transport to and from school and helps students to attend cultural and sport activities.

The laptops will be used by all students entering their first year in public and private high schools in the region

With the free software laptops, the regional administrations wants to increase the educational options for the school children and, at the same time, offering all students an equal access opportunity.

ENT (Environnement Numérique de Travail, digital work environment) is a collection of educational structures made and deployed by each of the 27 regions in France. The Languedoc-Roussillon region however will be the first to put their specific ENT to use for all schools, according to a press statement published by IT service provider Bull in March.

The company writes it is using open source components, building a platform around the open source ESUP portal, which is already used by the universities of the city of Montpellier, the region's capital.

THE NUMBER of schools offering free French lessons to foreign parents is set to triple this year, the government has announced.

Some 3,000 adults currently benefit from the scheme in 750 schools around France. Le Parisien says it will be extended to 9,000 people and 750 classes from the new academic year in September.

More schools join timetable pilot

A NEW school routine in which children work in the morning and practise sport after lunch will be extended to another 125 secondary schools in September, the education ministry has announced.

Some 7,000 pupils have been taking part in the experiment at 125 schools around France since the start of the academic year. This will be doubled to 250 schools and 14,000 pupils after the summer break.

Revolt stirs in France's schools against 'elitist' education system

The French government is experimenting with introducing more cultural activities in schools and has reformed the grading system in primaries.

It's hard to believe, when lessons are under way, that there are 700 children at Lou Redounet high school in Uzés, southern France. The corridors are silent; not a single pupil is out of place.

But behind the classroom doors a series of revolutionary experiments is under way. Children falling behind in maths, French and English are being taken aside for extra tutoring. In a few classes the tough marking system that dominates French schools has been quietly dropped. Teachers are encouraged to treat every pupil as an individual. By British standards these changes seem uncontroversial, but in France they are deemed so radical that they have already cost one headteacher his job........

I just wanted to remind you that it's the ESKA event next Saturday, at 4pm, at the Salle de Conférences in Lunel Viel (www.englishspeakingkidsassociation.fr). We have planned a Carnival, so please come dressed up, there'll be some games and we can make some crêpes, I'll bring a batch of crêpe mixture and some apricot jam, if you have other preferences then please bring along a contribution ;-)

Just to give you advance notice, we plan to organise a picnic in the park event for April with a particular focus on older children, I have quite a list now of older children so I think it's about time we did something for them... again please don't hesitate to give me your ideas for this.

Ecole Maternelle - sign ups

I went this morning to our local mairie ... My Eloise turns 3 in September so will be starting the petite section of our local maternelle.

I had to take our livret de famile (birth certificate), our tax d'habiation and an EDF (electricity) bill.

Next week, I then take my mairie declaration with me to take to the school along with her vaccination certificate to enrol her at school.

She's really going to love it...

My 6 yr old who is in CP / primaire - has brought home a note today to ask if there are children who are of the following origins would like to have extra classes outside of school time in their language and culture.

Algerian, Moroccan, Spanish and Turkish.

They are saying that classes have to have a minimum of 12 people in the class and that classes may be held in another school nearby. These classes would be for children in CE1 and CM2 (the years are described via a link in the column of this blog).

My child's class already has English classes (me) 20 mins a week and her own teacher continues on that class herself again in the week.

A Local Primary school...

It's been a little while since I've done a 'personal' post. I just wanted to tell you about my 6 year old daughters school in an ordinary small town in France.

Alicia is in CP - which is the first year of obligatory education in France (though everybody goes to school at 3 years in fact..)

She goes to school Mon Tues Thurs & Friday from 0845hrs - 1145hrs and 1345hrs to 1645hrs - and she stays for lunch at the cantine for Euro3.50 a day.
There is extra study each day from 1645hrs to 1745hrs for kids to do their homework which is free if you want to send them.
Can put your child in the garderie too from 0730hrs and until 1830hrs and this costs Euro1.45 a go or Euro2.50 a day.
Alicia goes to the swimming pool weekly for one trimester a year.
There are 20 children in Alicia's class.
On Monday and Thursday nights she does a drama / music club which is run by an association and costs Euro12 a year.

They have an English class for 20 minutes a week.
At the beginning of the year I bought about Euro10 worth of books / folders / pens / glues etc (they give you a list) and a rucksack for Euro20
They are currently training for a cross country race!
They have an annual visit from a nurse... checking vaccinations, eyes, teeth and so on... (probably mostly for nits!)
There is the equivalent of a lolly pop lady in the road outside in the morning and evening to stop passing traffic.
She has about 10 mins of homework every night.
Every month she brings home ALL of her workbooks and we have to go through as parents and sign that we have seen the work.
During the holidays, there are activities: for example this March, on Monday she can do acrobatics, Tuesday visit to the snow in the mountains, Wednesday ice skating, Thursday a visit to the local indoor play park and the swimming pool and Friday: horse riding - the mountain trip is Euro20 and the others are Euro13 a day - picnics required everyday.
The school is 1.5km from us, we asked to be moved to a nearer school and were refused by the mairie.
It's normal to take a cake (they often ask for shop bought to avoid allergy problems) and juice for your child's birthday.

I can't think of anything else immediately - but will add here when I think of anything...

SHORTER summer holidays, shorter days and a five-day school week are planned in the new report on the school year that has been handed to education minister Luc Chatel.

Just two years after the present rythmes scolaires were imposed in the rentrée in 2008, the committee said the present school day was “too tiring” for pupils.

It made for an exhausting school week that gave pupils too heavy a workload. There was also no good reason for the first term being so long.

Parents call for boycott of tests

THE largest parents’ federation is calling for a boycott on tests to be held in the last year of primary school (CM2) next week.

The FCPE says the start-of-year tests for the CM2 classes, launched three years ago, are a “profound mistake”. A spokesman said: “It is not acceptable for children to be evaluated on things they have not been taught yet.” They are asking their members to write to schools saying they refuse to have their children’s results passed to the government.

New research has found that expat parents regard the UK as one of the worst places in the world to bring up children.

Most expats feel that their children's quality of life has improved since moving abroad, new research from HSBC Bank International has shown

HSBC Bank International interviewed over 4,100 expat parents around the world about their experiences of bringing up children abroad as part of their annual Expat Explorer survey.

Expats were asked to rank their new home according to such factors as the cost of raising children, the quality of education, and how easy it was for their children to integrate..

Peter Gumbel certainly doesn’t shy away from controversy. The British-born journalist and lecturer, who has lived in France since 2002, has just published a book which has sent ripples through his adopted country. Called They Shoot Schoolchildren, Don't They?, the book is a hard-hitting analysis of the French education system - an institution which, Gumbel argues, breeds anxiety and under-confidence amongst its pupils.

"The teacher shouted all the time," he informed his fellow pupils. "She wrote a 'naughty list' on the board. She waved a bamboo stick around. And the reading book was really boring." To emphasise his point, he ripped up a picture he had printed from the offending book and threw it into the air, concluding: "I like English school."

I undertook the typical life in France with kids annual treat of buying school supplies for la Rentrée yesterday, eldest strongly in tow.

Last year I was spared this mega chore because his school had thoughtfully subscribed to Scoleo.fr where the teachers give a list of supplies to the website and parents can log on and get the whole load bought and delivered in the twinkle of an eye. Sadly, my eldest has had to change schools and the teachers at his present one can't be fagged to budge from their usual habit of yelling 'Same as last year!' to the Vie Scolaire team as they rush out the door for the summer holidays.

McDonalds kid friendly?

Just wanted to share this as it annoyed me so much... we went to McDonalds in Lunel on Saturday - only the second time ever for Alicia 5yrs and perhaps my third time in 12 yrs!

On trying to find a high chair for Eloise, 18 months, I had to ask a cleaner - who asked for me for my ID (like I take my passport with me when I go to McDonalds??!!) as they only give highchairs in exchange for an ID card - when I said I didn't have an ID on me, they asked for my car keys (brand new and Euro14,000 worth of car... .) I think not.

So generally they didn't trust me to not steal their highchair (worth what? Euro20?) but I have to trust them with my car???

What gets me is this meant to be a family friendly place isn't it? Where you can't borrow a high chair?

We won't be going back.

Last year we were thrilled to announce the opening of the American section at Lycée Jules Guesde in Montpellier. This decision was a true reward for your years of support and efforts for this educational project (which is now going very well). Partnerships are currently under discussion between a New York City high school and the Montpellier high school.

Today, we again have great news to share with all the supporters of English language education in Montpellier: the local Board of Education has officially announced the opening of the American section at junior high school level in September 2010.

B school is a bilingual (French/English) nursery and primary school. We cater for children from the age of two, until they leave for secondary school.

Our aim at B School is to create a learning atmosphere, where children will be happy in a pleasant environment in the heart of Montpellier. (within easy reach of the Ave. de Toulouse.)

Uzes, Pont du Gard and Haribo

Fancy a day out that's fun for adults and kids? Around 1 hour's drive from Montpellier...

Try going to Uzes for a walk around - great on a Saturday morning as it's the market - beware it can be very busy, especially in the Summer - window shopping is great there too. Buy yourself a picnic whilst you are there.

Then over to the Pont du Gard - only a few minutes in the car - great for a run around for the kids - find a patch of grass or a rock to sit down for your picnic - there is a film show (which is quite expensive) and a cafe (good choice and not expensive) there.

Finally, if you have energy - go over to Haribo the sweet museum / factory - freebies, a fabulous factory shop (the highlight of the trip actually) and lots of thing to sniff, poke and play with.

Bilingual Language Class for Kids

Ages 5-7 from 10.30h to 12.00h

Ages 7-11 from 14.00h to 15.30h

In cooperation with John Day, Language Teacher, and Claire Boutin, Professional

Story Teller, we present an interactive bilingual language class for kids where they

can familiarize themselves with the English language while not forgetting their native speech French.

Exclusively during school vacations!

Rugby School in Poussan

No doubt there are a few kiddy's rugby schools around - but I found details of the one in Poussan in a free newspaper.

It says it was restructured in 2006 and has 150 boys and girls aged from 5 to 15yrs - looked after by 15 unpaid, diplomed helpers.
